Installing 2008 instance on 2005 box

  • I want to install an instance of 2008 R2 on my development box that already is running 2005. Any suggestions or best practices for locating/naming folders, files, defaults etc.. ?

I would like to minimize any confusion between the 2 versions.

    Thanks

2008 R2 creates its own set folder structure so no confusion, just install the extra instance you require

  • I suggest you run the .Net 3.5 installation before you run the SQL 2008 installation, and plan what you would do if the .Net install fails.

One of the most error-prone aspects of putting SQL 2008 on a box that already has SQL 2005 plus a lot of fixes is getting .Net 3.5 to install. When we upgraded our developer workstations a few years back about 30% of them would not take the .Net upgrade. You can Google for some Microsoft advice on how to get round this issue, but their suggestions do not fix all issues. About 10% of our developer boxes had to have Windows reinstalled. We also had at least one server that had to be rebuilt due to a failed .Net 3.5 install.

Getting SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 to run side by side is not really a problem on a new install of Windows, but on a machine that has had a lot of fixes and uninstalls/reinstals it can be a problem.
