Anyone else experiencing this? It fails to install on the database services.

I'm running 3186 and ran into this on one of our instances. I just applied the hotfix on the database engine during the second pass without error.. Does it give you a specific error message? Have you looked through the log files (i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\). Good luck 🙂

That KB article it mentions says something about the file name SQLServer2005-KB936252-x86-ENU.exe. But no fix.

Are your system databases in the default location prior to installation? Will it start in single user mode (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180965.aspx)?

No they are not in default locations. Let me try single user mode.

Does not start in single user mode. Do I need to put the system databases in original location?

Yes, you do.

Good Luck!

🙂 that will do it every time. Put them back in the default location and apply the hotfix.
