I've tried to install SQL2005 Standard Edition on a "play" server - a HP ML110 G4, and it seemed to install fine - but none of the SQL services appear on Net Start. Trying to connect with Management Studio also fails.
During installation, it did warn me that it didn't meet the hardware requirements - and to check Books Online. However, I felt that it did meet them -it's a dual-core Xeon machine with 512MB (more coming soon), and 100GB on its SATA drive.
What am I missing?

So you dont see 'MSSQLSERVER' in your list of running services?
When you installed SQL Server, what account did you set the services to run as? Is the account a local admin account?

No, SQL Server is not on the list of services.
It was a few weeks ago when I originally installed it, and I don't recall setting up accounts/passwords. The server it is on is not part of a domain, so I assumed I would be able to login with the Windows 2003 administrator username and password - but I can't.
I've since removed SQL and components from the box, and then reinstalled - but it's still not working. I suspect that the failure to meet minimum hardware requirements (though I don't know why this is brought up) stops the services from running.
Perhaps I'll try SQL2000 instead.

For the record - what surprised me is that the server is suitable for Windows Server 2008 (which seems to have the same sort of requirements as SQL2005), but hits an minimum hardware requirement with SQL2005.
My solution was to install SQL2008 CTP - it met the minimum hardware requirements, and seems to run fine.
Perhaps I just had a faulty SQL2005 disc, or a bad install that couldn't be installed over?
