installation problem -- Enterprise Mgr. unable to register SQL Server

  • Greetings.

I'm migrating to SQL Server 2000 from various Linux DBs, and I've just attempted my first installation.

Everything appeared to go well, but when I went to Enterprise Manager to "New SQL Server Registration," the server is not listed among the "Available Severs" .... in fact, the only server listed there is a Linux server which has no SQL Server on it (obviously).

I'm sure this is elementary, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what I've done wrong.

Anyone who can point me in the right direction? Any and all suggestions most appreciated.

(I realize I may not have told you everything you need to know to answer my question -- please ask for more info if you need it.)

    Thanks again.

    Kenn

  • if you're using EM on the actual SQL2000 server on which you've installed, try the registration with "from now on let's do this without the wizard", type in the server box...

       (local)

    or simply

         .

...and see if your local SQL 2000 instance gets registered.

You installed SQL as a default (as opposed to named) instance I presume?

  • This is common for me.  Just type in the name of the server and it will work.

  • I you run Enterprise Manager for the first time on your server (the computer where you have installed SQL Server), it should have automatically registered your SQL Server.

Apparently you are running Enterprise Manager from another computer and you are haveing difficulty connecting to the remote server. Use the Client Network Utility to configure access to the server.

    Regards.

  • Well, the situation is this. The domain control is still being carried out by the NT4 server ... I simply want to attach this new server (which is running Windows Server 2003) as a member server, leaving the control to the NT4 box (for now) ...
