Hi,
I am trying to install SQL server service pack 3a and the install goes thru ok until the end and I get the error telling me "installation of the Microsoft Full-Text Search has failed".
Any clues?

Yes... Checkout the following KB articles:

I'd also recommend that you review your server's Application Event log for any "Microsoft Search" source events, specifically for warnings and errors.
