Hi,
I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 in Windows 2000 Server. SQL already uninstalled, when the installation steps comes to program and data folder
c:\program files\Microsoft Sql Server
I get the following error message
"The Maximum allowed length of installed path is 35 characters "
How to over come this message ?

It seems pretty obvious to me that 35 is not a limitation since that path itself is 36 (if I counted right) and that is the standard location. I would start by seeing whatelse is running when doing the installation. Do you have any virus software running? Are there any spam filters? Are tools like Symantec resident? Do you have all the latest patches on your OS? Stop as much of the resident stuff as possible and get all of the patches, reboot your machine and try again. That cannot be the real source of the problem.

Hi,
A random thought occurred to me. Is the limitation of 35 characters on just the directory name where SQL server is installed?
I remember in a recent install picking a data drive E:\ for SQL server and specifying an \MSSQL directory, only to discover to my annoyance that SQL Server had created the directory as E:\MSSQL\MSSQL\ because it had already decided to add the first \MSSQL. If I had read the installation screens properly I would have realised this.
It is quite easy to miss the fact the SQL Server installer already has a pretty good idea of where it wants to put the software and data, and you can easily mess up the install path by trying to be too helpful...

Another random thought, you say SQL Server is already 'uninstalled', are you implying that it was previously installed and you are re-installing to the same path.
Maybe your registry got chewed over a little when you did the uninstall and needs some careful regedit or regclean attention?
