I was unable to install SQL Server 2000 on my HP laptop running ME OS. (1) can you install SQL Server 2000 on a laptop? (2) If so on what Microsoft OSs? (3) Any other problems or solutions I should be aware of?

Yes, you can install SQL Server 2000 on a laptop. My personal machine is a laptop and I've got Developer Edition (MSDN) running on it as we speak.
As for versions, SQL Server 2000 editions are dependent upon the Operating System. Take a look at the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/planning/ChoosEd.doc
It's a Word document that's an excerpt from the SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit and it explains the different versions. SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition can run on Windows ME.

Thank you for informing about Personal Edition. Is there a trial version available to download to my laptop? I couldn't find just the Personal Edition on the MS web site. I have a trial version on a MS CD but was unable to install it on my laptop running ME.
