Can I install SQL Server 2005 64 bit enterprise edition on Windows server 2008 R2 64 bit Enterprise edition? I tried and installed a few components but the database would not fly.

You should be able to install it.

It appears that it is supported with SQL 2005 SP3. If I remember correctly, you either need to slip stream SP3 into the install or run the SP3 install first to install the support files, then install SQL 2005, and apply SP3.
