Install SP3 on failover cluster....

  • I want to pass this on to anyone who may need to install SQL Server SP3 on a failover cluster...

The Readme.htm file in section 3.10 (Installing on a Failover Cluster) says the following:

    2. Run the service pack from the node that owns the group containing the virtual server that you are going to upgrade. This installs the service pack files on all nodes in the failover cluster.

    end of quote.

I mis-interpreted the '...node that owns the group...'. I thought it meant to install it on whichever node had the virtual server was online. Wrong! The 'node that owns the group' is the one that the virtual server was initially installed on.

If you do install SP3 on the wrong node, you will get a message saying something to the effect that the installed failed to update on all cluster nodes. All you need to do is restart any stopped services, fail over, and install the SP on the other node.

I also had to restart both of my nodes regardless of whether I did it correctly (on the owner node) or incorrectly.

  • Let's say you have a two node cluster (node1 and node2). You initially install SQL Server on node1. Later node1 breaks and you create a new node, node3. My understanding is that node2 became the owner when node1 broke and went away. I have not had this happen to me, so I'm not really sure about the answer.
