Install 2014 SQLExpress has affected my SQLExpress 2012 Installation

  • Hi,

It's very weird but I installed SQLExpress 2014 as named instance SQLEXPRESS2014. I already had a SQLExpress 2012 installed as named instance SQLEXPRESS and now when I try to connect to 2012 SQL, it won't accept my Windows Authentication login. It displays the message:

    TITLE: Connect to Server

    ------------------------------

    Cannot connect to MELB-WS-113\SQLEXPRESS.

    ------------------------------

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

I have quite a few databases set up in there and I can no longer access them. Anyone come across this issue before?

    TIA

  • I am certain there are hundreds to thousands of hits about error 26's name resolution error message (e.g. support.microsoft.com returns 33 hits on "Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections"). On my non-express edition, I use SSCM to ensure the service exists, is started, and is listening on TCP. If the service is found missing, examine SQL Server Setup's recent bootstrap logs (not just the latest).

  • Thanks for your help. I feel pretty dumb but your advice to look for the service was a good one. For some reason it hadn't started, seems it is not starting on boot up even though it is set to automatic. Anyhow thanks again.
