1st things 1st, I'd check there's a good backup schedule in place and that you're able to use these backups in the event of a disaster, after doing that I'd read this link;

If you're just getting started as a DBA, first thing, treat production like a patient and you're a doctor, do no harm.
After that, the list of things you have to do is huge. I'd suggest getting a copy of this book to get started.
