Didn't realise I paid attention to the film that closely, but the answer jumped out at me as soon as I saw the question!

THAT statement, my friend, puts entire mankind back with hope. We never know what we know until the opportunity presents itself, when time is right everything becomes clear.
Happy Independence Day.

Indeed - it's amazing how much random knowledge gets lodged in the grey matter over the years (And how helpful it can be sometimes, and not just for 7 points :)).
As I didn't say it before (Sorry - in the UK and we don't celebrate it so it slipped my mind) - Happy Independance Day to all in the USA! Hope you've all got a non-work holiday planned and get to catch up with the life side of the work/life balance 🙂

My brothers and I consider the movie Independence Day to be one of the great comedies of our time!
Jeff Goldblum gets to the Mother ship, he is able to dock with the mother ship, launch a nuke, WIRELESSLY hook up his laptop with the alien OS, upload a virus that is 100% compatible with the alien OS, pirate graphics and audio, and then make a clean get away!
That is funny!

Yet another neat publicity stunt by Apple. I guess they can afford to pay Fox for the publicity because without that sort of rubbish publicity there products would be rather less popular - after all, nobody but brain-washed fan-boys wants to pay premium prices for that sort of rubbish product.

So this time I waited until after the weekend...

Or the Aliens weren't really that advanced, were also taken in by the Apple publicity machine and based their OS on Apple.
Or Steve Jobs was really an Alien, sent to infiltrate earth in a dasterdly plot that went horrifically wrong for the Aliens (in a series of disappoint schenes that hit the cutting room floor)
Or that.......

I think everyone recognizes these types of appearances for what they are - paid advertising. Companies have paid for this since before the beer can appeared in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Cars, beer, phones, computers, etc. all want to have this kind of lasting advertising for a one-time cost.

As far as I know, Apple, Inc. does not pay for product placement. The media, movies, TV, etc. frequently use Apple, Inc. products in their features because of the perceived uniqueness of the products. Those viewers that are not familiar with those products could more readily accept outlandish capabilities for the purpose of moving the plot forward. Even when the products are just used as a prop in a storyline the implication is that the good guys use the "cool" Apple, Inc. computers, etc. and the bad guys, if any, use PCs.
