In Enterprise Manager, no servers listed

  • I just installed SQL 2000 on a Windows XP Home Edition machine and cannot see my server name listed in Enterprise Manager.  I'm not signing in as anything when I boot up the computer, but a look at user accounts shows one user called the Compaq_Owner with admin rights so I assume I'm in as an administrator.  Any other reasons I can't see the server?  I successfully installed Great Plains 8.0 in which you have to connect to the server to run some of the initial set up stuff - so I am connecting, just can't see in Enterprise Manager.

  • If SQL Server is actually installed do you see a server called (local)?  If so, that is your server.

Or maybe you need to register the server in EM.  Right click on "SQL Server Group" and select "New SQL Server Registration".

  • You'll need to register the server name.  Open Enterprise Mgr and right click Microsoft SQL Servers.  You'll have the option to register a new group or server registration.  In your case, choose "New SQL Server Registration".

A wizard should appear to help you through.  On the opening page choose next.  On the second page under "Avaliable Servers" type the name of the db server you wish to connect.  The choose Add.  Next page of the wizard will ask for Authentication mode (Windows NT or SQL Server login).  The next page will allow you to place the new registered server under an exsiting group or create a new one (your choice).  Lastly, choose finish.  If you have the server name correct and have permissions, the server will register and appear for your use.

    Hope this helps.

  • Slightly off topic, but I didn't think you could install the SQL-Server service on XP Home edition. Am I wrong?

I know that you can install Enterprise Manager

  • Sam,

The evaluation, developer, personal, and MSDE all install on XP Home.

    Wendy,

Are you SURE you installed the SERVER and not just the CLIENT TOOLS? If you did install the Server, then I agree with the other posters, you haven't REGISTERED your server instance via Enterprise Manager.

A quick test....open Query Analyzer and see if you can 'see' the database from there. If you can connect (via the QA login box) then you have a SQL Server installed and you just need to do the registering via Enterprise Manager.

  • Also, since this is XP Home if you have installed SP2, it installs the MS Personal Firewall which blocks the SQL Server ports. So make sure to open the necessary ports.

  • SJ,

That's a good point, but Wendy is accessing it from the same machine that it's installed on so the firewall wouldn't be used.
