I got this from Database Weekly. SQL Server seems to lose market share instead of gaining market share. Some people thinks it is because there is still no release date of SQL Server 2008.

Based on trends I see good things for Microsoft going forward.

Microsoft didn't really lose, it's that Oracle and DB2 grew at a faster rate, but SQL Server didn't. It was still growing, but few at 18.3% instead of 18.4 from the year before.
There are other platforms, so it's hard to tell who might have lost market share or gained. The pie also grows bigger every year as well.

last 5 years Oracle has gone on a shopping spree buying up all kinds of server application companies. BEA, Peoplesoft, etc etc. if you want to run one of these applications you have to buy Oracle.
