I have a PC that had sql 2005 running on it that has died. The OS is corrupt and wont boot / repair at all.
I have managed to get the MDF file off of the machine but I cant attach it to another SQL server because it is damaged.
How can I go about trying to repair this file?

Check this http://www.sqlrepair.org/ you may able to repair . But I doubt if you can . I have not tried myself , but you can give a try .

Don't try any of the advertised repair sites/tools.

What are the EXACT errors you get when trying to attach? Please use the T-SQL CREATE DATABASE ... FOR ATTACH, not the GUI so that you can get all of the messages.

Restore from the SQL Server backups or use SQL Server Repair Toolbox. The MS SQL repair tool reads *.mdf and *.ndf files and saves data, structure, links, etc. as SQL scripts or exports directly to Microsoft SQL Server through direct connect. I think it is very irresponsible to propose a tool or a method for a repair when the actual problem is not known!
