One thought that hadn't occurred to me previously, what happens when some other dope, after getting a laptop stolen from the security-guard-free Starbucks, decides to slap a lawsuit upside their heads?
I would sincerely hope such a lawsuit would be thrown out of court. It's obsession with absolute safety the blame game that destroys the opportunity to make one's own choices and accept one's own risk. The result of a successful suit will simply be the reduction of public hotspots
Keep in mind too the perspective of relative numbers, millions of people have used laptops in these public places, a statistically small number have been victims of crime.

Hi Jay, I was wondering if that was a crime hotspot you were referring to, then I realised it was a wireless hotspot.
Starbucks will probably do what their customers want, including having hotspots, there's just too much competition for them to do otherwise. I wonder what happens when WiMax becomes available? Perhaps they'll spend the money from the redundant hotspot points on security or drop the price of a cuppa. Then again maybe not.

Maybe there's more to worry about than mere iJacking...read snippets below and rejoice everytime you walk out of Starbucks with your skin intact...
"An afternoon coffee break at Starbucks turned deadly Sunday when a San Jose patrol officer fatally shot a patron who attacked him and threw a chair at him, police said."
"Mary Caitrin Mahoney, one of three victims shot and killed in a botched robbery at a Starbucks coffeehouse..."
"Two men were killed in a shooting on Thursday in front of a Starbucks coffee shop inside the Aventura Mall in suburban Miami.."
"SAN FRANCISCO - A 44-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of planting an explosive device in the bathroom of a Starbucks coffee shop, police said."
"Police have taped off the New Starbucks in 7 Corners tonight after someone attempted to throw a molotov coctail through one of their windows. This is the fourth time a window has been smashed on the property since the development began."

In the UK many people walk over to the shop and paydesk on the garage forecourt leaving their cars unlocked and often with keys in the ignition. It's just as easy there to snatch money, goods, laptops etc or drive off in the car!
My ex always used to leave his car unlocked, laptop in back or boot, even when he was carrying around the code for the internet security system for a major internet bank!!
