Ha, ha, yes that is true. I didn't mean *this current* government. 🙂 Also, and I don't know exactly how this could be done, but I also didn't necessarily mean that the government would have access the the plaintext of the data. I just think that there should be governmental oversight to make sure that there is a minimum level of security wherever an organization (private or public) decides it is going to store someone's personal information. Maybe it also involves something more secure than an SSN (although the system changes needed in such a shift boggle my mind).
And, of course, it would help to have a Congress that held officials accountable to the laws on the books.
