I need to give someone a test on T-SQL

  • I need to interview someone tomorrow and I don't want to get burned by not testing the candidates resume experience on T-SQL. Any suggestions on something relatively complicated that I could have the candidate sit at a terminal and test? Thanks!

  • Is this for development? Or admin? for admin, have them create a db, back it up, then restore it as a different name.

for development, have them write a report you need. have them create a table with a foreign key, then alter the table. then alter the key.

Feel free to steal from here:

  • I would be tempted to grab a few dozen questions from this sites Questions in the QUD.

Then rate the new person against how well your current staff does against the same test.

Be sure you know wether or not your looking for someone who does better than your current staff or at least does equally well?

Also, remind them that you don't expect them to get all the questions correct or you'll lose your candidate before it's completed.

    Try http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000073.html

And don't be that hard like Joel, give it a bit loose

But, the point is, don't take someone who knows supetech stuff right now - and base the decision only on thet. New stuff is being announced and used every day, withing a short period knowledge of a particulat IT area becomes shaky. And what are you going to do with someone who wants only to to the old particular thing and refuses to cooperate?
