Wouldn't it be easier to hire the right person in the first place?....Sorry to disagree, but the people doing the hiring and the hiring process needs to change.
Agreed. But anyway, out here in the place we call the "real world", we make due with the least worst option. A CTH arrangement gives both sides the opportunity to evaluate the other. The employer might have more leverage in the employment game but they definitely do not hold all the cards - even in the Great Recession.
Besides, job security is a myth and as a perm employee you will always get stuck with the "business as usual" grunt work. Always. How many times has a really great project been handed over to a contractor or consultant with specialist skills? Your boss isn't going to pay a contractor $100/hr to sit around and fill out change forms or restore the dev database for the 10th time or change the header on the sales report from midnight blue to dark blue. No no, they are going to give the plum work to the $100/hr guy (or gal) and then hand it to you to support and maintain.
Back to the main topic about lies; if you lie and get caught then it's an opportunity to improve your lying skills. If you lie and get away with it then maybe you should consider a career in sales 🙂

It would be nice if people would fess up. I had a co-worker similar to Gails cited experiences. Somehow that person remains employed at the same location - baffling.
