  i know 2005 does not have the enterprise manager, but is the there something similar?

   

  also can i installed the express edition on xp to practice, can i put in the standard edition 2005 disk and choose to just install like client tools like i did in 2000. if so, which ones do i use , is there any gui management tool?

  All in one tool called SQL Server Management Studion (SSMS).

  You can install Express but it has some limitations... it will not have sql agent, MPs, etc..

  For practive and learning purpose better to use developer editionl, if you have standard editon you can install it on xp.

  If you don't want to buy you can down load 180 day trial version from MS Site...
