I just spent my lunch break reading articles about Hurricane Sandy, and many of them are absolutely heart-wrenching.
I live in upstate New York (Albany area), and we escaped unscathed. Unfortunately, many people around the coastal areas, especially the New York Metro area, New Jersey, Mid-Atlantic, and New England aren't as lucky.
I have a large number of friends and family who are in the affected areas, and I'm thinking about them right now.
Anyway, not really sure as to the point of this post, except that I just wanted to get that out of my system, and maybe to pass along the message of thinking about people affected.

Got family all over NY/NJ. Still trying to reach one of them, though I know the power was going down so my guess is her cell simply perma-died. In most cases the damage is remarkably recoverable. My heart goes out to those episodes that went much worse.
Never stop learning, even if it hurts. Ego bruises are practically mandatory as you learn unless you've never risked enough to make a mistake.

My church (Scientology Volunteer Ministers) is already sending volunteers into the area to help out. Red Cross always asks us to help out on this kind of thing.
Anyone who wants to volunteer directly (not as part of an organized group) can help out in NYC by contacting nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov or in NJ by calling 1-800-JERSEY-7. If you have a group (religious or secular) that wants to help out, contact Red Cross to organize it with them.
Apparently Red Cross is asking for cash, per what I read, not food/clothing. You can donate here: http://www.redcross.org/
Other relief groups are the usual list: Salvation Army, ASPCA (helping people who lost homes care for pets, that kind of thing), AmeriCares, and others (you can find more via Bing/Google, of course).
