Howdy
I had my enterprise manger and query windows open.
I was working back and forth between .net and sql.
My machine started running really slowly and I couldn’t open or close anything although I was using no memory.
Finally the machine shut down; when I restarted and tried to open up enterprise manager I get this silly error:
Microsoft Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I can open up the query window and connect perfectly.
I wanted to simply repair the app, but that does not seem to be an option under add or remove programs or from the disk itself.
It is also not in my list to simply remove it to reinstall it.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this to open?
Thanks
D

Have you had any luck? I just had the same thing happen, I reinstalled SQL, and it still doesn't work.
I'm hoping that you were able to make it work in the nine months since you posted your problem.

Howdy
If I can remember what I did, I think I backed up my SQL Server folder, uninstalled SQL, re-installed it and then created another server and named it the old one and then slowly moved things over.
I believe that is the jacked up way of doing things. But I was in a hurry.
The correct way to do it that seems like it would still work, is move the backups or mdf files of the db's you want to keep, uninstall and reinstall and then reattach or import those dbs.
I can only tell you what I did, I never found out what the problem was and I never heard the correct solution.
Good luck.

Enterprise Manager is just a GUI. You can remove it without affecting the database(s) in any way. You can also reinstall it without affecting any DBs. If you reinstall it, all you need to do is reregister your server.

Similar thing happened to me.
You need to check the application log, it should tell you what the problem is.
It happened to me after installing service pack3a.
I was getting error
Faulting application mmc.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2595, fault address 0x000402d0.
It turned out I was having problems with ole32.dll. I Renamed it to ole32.dll.old, and reinstalled sp3a.

I'll check my logs, didn't think to look there. I uninstalled and reinstalled, no change. I understand that MMC is just a gui, but it's still broken. I can get into Computer Management and it was my understanding that was also an MMC framework.

SOLUTION!
Logs didn't show anything. Our support tech, don't ask me why, suspected a video card driver. Like I said, don't ask me why. Anyway, when he came over, he was able to log in to my computer and access Enterprise Manager.
The answer: screwed-up profile.
We signed on as machine administrator, copied a bunch of profile files from Documents and Settings, deleted the profile and got back in.
Iz fixed.
Definitely something to remember!

I have found an easy solution.
In the folder "Documents and Settings\<<username>>\Application Data\Microsoft\MMC" there is an XML-file called "SQL Server Enterprise Manager" (no extension).
Delete this file and you are up and running again.
My approch:
I have tried changing settings in the registration database with settings from other users: No luck and reinstalling SQL Server: No luck
I read above that a difference in profiles help so i started in "Document and settings". I found the file mentioned and exchanged it with a file from another user: It worked then I just deleted it: It still worked.
The file is simply regenerated by the MMC/Enterprice manager plugin
Good luck to the rest of u.

Very cool! Important thing to try and remember. I wish I'd known of this before deleting my profile, I'd forgotten about my browser bookmarks and lost a lot of good stuff.
Sigh.

Thank you very much. The "easy solution" works like a charm.
