Please do not post duplicate post in different forums it will save other people time too..

Actually, I would have done the same thing if I thought the answer I got on one forum wasn't quite what I was looking for and no one else jumped in to help.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

I tend to give up 🙂

However, I am ALWAYS looking to engage people who need help and to discuss their problems with them and teach them while working for a solution. And a lot of these people just post on four forums at once ( I see evidence of this ALL the time ), and I just think that's a bit rude, and it's always disappointing when people won't engage to try to solve their issue, if not given a copy and paste solution.

So, my point was, he both failed to take up my offer of help, and seemed to have cross posted all at once.

I agree that it can be a touchy problem.

I see that you've edited your post on the other forum within the span of dates on this thread. Is that when you added code or was the code already there? The OP originally seemed to indicate there was no code example there previously.

  • I feel sorry that I opened this can of worms, I'm not sure how much benefit there is in discussing it further. My very first post there, was with code. My point was mostly to do with his response, that I only told him to use CTEs. If that is true, it was true by five minutes, I may have posted general advice, while I worked on the SQL I posted.

I put a fair amount of time in to helping people with their SQL ( not saying I'm better than anyone else, but I do put time in ). It's really disappointing to me when people obviously need a lot of help, but refuse to engage beyond wanting a cut and paste solution. All the people whose work I do for them, are worth it to me, for the one or two who engage with me and let me help them further than solving their immediate problem. That's where I was coming from.

Very well said. I absolutely agree. Part of my interest in this proverbial can of worms was figuring out the human element, which can be as interesting as the code solution itself. Since I also spend a fair bit of time helping folks, discussions like this help me decide who to help first and for that, I'm extremely grateful for your initial alert and follow up. I really appreciate it.

    Thanks, Christian.
