How To: Schedule a copy of DB from one SQL server to SQL

  • David,

And this only pertains to the report db (disconnection). That is not an issue, since it will be done at midnight and most users turn computers off, but even if they did not having them disconnected during this process is not a problem. I am only going to do it once a night.

The production server will only incur a small hit with the log backups but that will provide you with better protection throughout the day and will eliminate the possibility of having to have people re-enter data if there was an error.

Advantage.... Log shipping is a solid technology so, you don't have to "home grow" a restore process. I know that shouldn't be too hard but still log shipping is supported by MS so, you know that it is solid. AND, as already mentioned, you build yourself in some extra protection with enhanced backup architecture. If there is ever a failure your boss will love you. That should be reason enough. 😛

Obviously this is all opinion so, you should do what is best for your organization and your architecture.

    David,

I love this solution for the improved architecture and protection. I think this is the way to go.

Would you know where i could get some good step by step guide, or anything to read up on to do this?

    Regards,

    Mike

  • I would start with this link which is really BOL. I think you will find it to be pretty straightforward.

One note though, when they are mentioning using another server aside from the primary and the secondary server, it is for the most part in relation to this being a full Disaster Recovery solution rather than a reporting instance solution. So, you can pass by some of those recommendations.

Hope this helps. If you run into problems during the config feel free to either post back to this thread or start a new one. I would recommend a new one as the topic and the replies might be helpful to others who experience issues during the configuration of log shipping. Either way I will try to keep my eye out for anything further that you post regarding this.

    Have fun!

Apprecite the link. Will read through it and get back to you next week.

    Thanks David!
