Shortly after starting to use 2008 I made the mistake of playing with the floating/dockable Object Explorer & Registered Servers windows. I have managed to get them back to where they were (left margin) but a 'New Query' window goes full screen behind the docked Object Explorer/Register Servers. I have to close them to get to the left side of the query window instead of having all 3 panes visible. Is there a way to restore it to the original settings?

Do you have those two panes "pinned?" If they are unpinned mine does the same thing. Pinning the windows (panes) fixes that.

So how do you 'pin' them?

There is a thumbtack icon in the upper right hand corner of the pane. If it is pointed down - the pane is pinned.

The problem is that there is no thumbtack icon. The only thing there is the down arrow to select the Windows position [floating, dockable, tabbed document, hide].

Are you able to drag and drop the window to different spots in SSMS at this point?
If so, drag to the left, you should see an icon pop out on each edge of the window and one in the middle. Drag your subwindow onto the icon on the left.
Or try the window menu, reset window layout.

Thanks Jason. That pinned them. The only issue left is the registered servers/object explorer are tabbed instead of one above the other. I can live with that unless there is an easy way to accomplish it.
BTW....for future reference there is a menu choice under 'Window' that says 'Reset Window layout'.

That was the second option in my last post.
As for the tabbed windows - that one is a little tricky. Click and drag the tabbed window that you want to move, drag it to the bottom box icon of the cross set of icons that appears. That will place that window in the bottom dockable section on the left.
