How to restore a .bak file of (LocalDB)\Toolkit database on Express Edition of 2012

  • I have MS assessment toolKit database backup file, I want to see and explore that database so I need to import that .bak file on my Express database engine on my local machine. How can I do this?

I tried simply restoring that .bak file but it can't pull details from that .bak file.

How can I access (LocalDB)\ToolKit instance in SQL Server Management studio?

  • Exactly what steps did you take, in what order, when you tried to restore the .bak file you have?

What were the results you got from each step?

  • There is no error, when providing .bak file to SSMS to restore it, it does not load backup file details. we can't move further.

  • I have resolved this by following:

1- Open SSMS Connect (LocalDB)\MapToolKit using my windows user credentials

2- Connected to database Server and listed the databases

3- Took a backup using SSMS and then when I restored that copy it worked.

Earlier, I was using Microsoft Assessment ToolKit for taking Backup which was also .bak file but it was not restoring using SSMS.

Thanks for your time and help/interest/response.

  • I must say that I do not fully comprehend what your problem was and how you solved it. But you did solve it, and that is in the end all that matters.

    Thanks for posting back!
