How to read New Posts on SQLServerCentral?

  • I'm probably being thick, but I'd be grateful if someone could please point me in the right direction.

How do you follow the forum to read new posts in existing / new threads of interest?

    I would like to:

See a list of recent posts. Preferably "new since last time" or something like that, but in chronological order, newest at the top, will do. (The one I have found is "Recent posts : Posts added today", but its two clicks, gives me a session-specific URL, so I can't just press REFRESH I seem to have to select the menu choices again)

Either excluding threads that I have read, or highlight unread ones. (The ones I have read appear to be lo-lighted, so that part is OK)

Then I want to click a link that takes me to the first unread post. I haven't found anything to do that. Clicking the Subject takes me to Page 1 Post 1. Clicking "Last post" (over on the right) takes me to the last post, natch!, but that may be further away from the first-unread that Page 1 Post 1 🙂 plus its a hard target to mouse-hit as it is not in a consistent position line-by-line.

Hopefully there is a smart way to minimise the amount of time spent trying to find a) topics I have read / want to follow and then b) getting to the first unread post.

Hi and welcome to SSC!!! You can click the "Active Threads" links. It is over there on the left side about 3 or 4 from the bottom. 😀

You can click the "Active Threads" links

    Thanks, that looks better.

    Is there any means to

    a) Click a link for the "first unread post" within the thread?

    b) Any ICON that indicates whether I am following that thread (I note that if I reply I am subscribed to the thread, but I'm not sure if there is an indication of that on the Active Threads list?)

You can't go directly to the first unread but on the right side of the listing is a link to the "last post". This is really helpful on some threads that get lengthy.

There isn't an icon or anything to indicate if you are following the thread. That however is a great idea. There is a section for making suggestions. http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Forum4-1.aspx I think this would be a good addition and worth suggesting.

  • also - once you are IN the forums area, you have access to the "Recent Posts" link which can show you anything started recently (whether it's "active" or not).

Well I'm the new kid on the block so I hate to speak out of turn but ... "Really? In 2015?"

People here really trawl through all the new threads that are posted remembering if they were interested in that thread / part-read it already?

And then having selected it they scroll all the way down trying to work out what they have read previously, and what they haven't?

There are plenty of well respected people here too, I'm amazed that they would stay here given the time they must spend/waste scrolling around threads ...

I know that is how forums have worked for years (I've been a round a LONG time 😎 ) but in this day and age (i.e. the other forums I read for This Hobby and That Hobby) the facilities are much more slick than that.

Xenoforo is my favourite. Absolutely fantastic facilities for regular contributors (including being able to "hide" specific forums (not of interest) from the "New posts", lists for "Threads being followed with new posts" and a "New threads" list which makes it a breeze to read through anything of interest (or subsequently mark that thread as "Stop following"), and to figure out which, of the new threads, are worth a read - any that are read are automatically marked "Follow" until such time as you click on "Stop following"

Sorry, but ploughing through reams of old posts in a thread to try to find the point where I last read up to is not for me. I'll drop by when Google brings me here, or if I have a question that you learned folk are more likely to be able to answer than other places, but I don't have enough hours in the day for "find my place again".

Hopefully TPTB will find that feedback helpful, I wasn't meaning to DIS the site.

P.S: I just tried to highlight part of my post in red to snaz-it-up 🙂 ... but I was asked the HEX number for the colour I want to use. I'm clearly not the nerd that I thought I was as THAT I would have to look up!!

  • You're right. The forum options are limited and the software can be better. I've understood that this happens because this isn't a priority for Redgate and just try to keep it running without spending much time on improvements.

The lack of quality of the software is very tolerable when you have so many great people helping here and the quality of answers and discussions are great.

Hopefully, we can get some improvements, in the meantime, I can't be upset because the content is great.

  • Kristen the forums here do have some drawbacks that not other forums have but I don't spend hours scrolling through posts on threads I am involved in to find my place. I get an email everytime somebody posts in a thread I am subscribed to. That email has a direct link to that update so I am taken directly to the newest post. Not as slick as some other places out there but once you figure out your strategy it really isn't a big deal at all.

I've been deleting those emails and using Active Threads :hehe: ... I'll pay more attention to them in future, thanks.
