Does anyone have any advice or can someone point me in the right direction for how to implement DR in an Active Directory domain?
We are using SQL 7 and are log shipping to the disaster recovery site. The primary machine is called LIVE1 and the DR machine is called DR1. In the event of a real DR being invoked, we would probably rename DR1 to LIVE1 and carry on as per normal. However, I know nothing about active directory and the domain administrator says that renaming the DR machine, testing the recovery and then renaming back to the original name causes too many problems.
The domain administrator knows nothing of SQL server. He is asking me to create duplicate copies of all of our DTS's and linked servers. One copy using the live name and one using the DR name. This can't be a good solution.
Does anyone know what Microsoft recommend?
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or links.

We haven't fully implemented AD yet (looking to do so in the next 24 months) as we're still using NDS so I stand to be corrected by someone who has. But unless the server in question is also a Domain Controller, I can't see the problem with renaming the server. We've done this several times with production machines when we needed a replacement and never had an issue. As long as you delete the server from SRVMGR, then rename it and reboot I can't really see where this would be a big deal. When the failed server is rebuilt, you can then just bring it back up in the domain with the DR name.
Anyone else care to comment?

Um, no, he's not correct if he's just talking about what it takes within AD. If they have monitoring agents, etc., then he may be completely correct. AD in and of itself doesn't cause that much heartburn. You just drop the system into a workgroup, rename, readd back to domian.
If that's not a possibility, you always have the option of using cliconfg on each client system and setting up aliases that make DR1 look like LIVE1.

Thank you sswords and bkelley for your responses. You have confirmed what I believed to be true i.e. renaming the machines is the best solution.
Sorry for the late response - just got back from a two week holiday!
