Hi,
You can download desktop engine edition from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=413744D1-A0BC-479F-BAFA-E4B278EB9147&displaylang=en
Thanks

MSDE is the free version, but doesn't include all the functions. If you have a license for SQL 2000 at your company, you can install Personal edition, but you will need the CD.
We do not support unlicensed software or condone it. If you don't have a license, you should not install it.

You should not use unlicensed version\softwares but if you don't have any license and still you want to learn SQL then you can download the evaluation version for free from Microsoft Site and it will be valid for around 180 days.
Its enough time to test and learn a technology & in the meantime you can plan to purchase your own lisenced copy. 🙂
