I've been told that there is a directory structure that needs to be in place and that the files from the CD/ISO need to go in specific places, in order to do an installation from hard disk. (for some reason the choice has been made to not mount the ISO, but install the files from an extracted CD/ISO).
I've searched high and low, but to no avail. Can anyone confirm this for me, and if so - do you know the directory hierarchy that is need to make a successful installation happen from hard disk?
This is a 2008 R2 Enterprise set of file, and is being run to do an in-place, edition upgrade to take the existing environment from Developer Edition (x64) to Enterprise Edition (x64).
Thanks to you all in advance!

I usually copy the extracted iso preserving the directorystructure to an install folder (like c:\install) disk, no extra directory work involved. Some installers hate to install from a folder that have spaces/special characters in its name.

I have had to do an install from hard disk before. You can try these steps, but they are from SQL 2005. This should still be relevant though.

Just make sure you have disk 1 in a folder called "Servers" and disk 2 in a folder called "Tools" camel case.

ACK!!! This is what I was afraid of. I have no idea what directories and files came from what CD, because it was an ISO that got extracted.
OK - I will see if I can't go about this another way.
Thanks to you both!

The ISO is probably just the first cd. You most likely wont need the second cd to do the edition upgrade and therefore done need to worry about the folder structure.. Just make sure you test this scenario in your staging environment.

unless you're downloading express edition SQL Server 2008 normally comes as a DVD image. The directory structure is totally different to SQL Server 2005. As far as i remember there are no cd1 and cd2.

For SQL 2008 and above, just copy the contents of the ISO file to a folder on your disk. You only have to worry about the \Servers and \Tools folders with SQL 2005.
I normally install SQL from media on the hard disk - it works OK.
