How to install report 'designer'?

  • I need to set up a number of machines in the organisation to allow them to design SRS2008 reports in the Visual Studio type environment.

These machines do not (and ideally would not) have an installation of SQL server on them - all I want to be able to do it to connect to a remote data source and create rdl files which can then be uploaded onto our organisational report server.

I have this working on one of our SQL servers, as presumably it was installed as part of the main SQL Server 2008 install, but is there any way of getting this facility onto my client PCs

(Have scoured MSDN but nothing seems to fit the bill)

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  • You could provide this functionality a number of different ways. IF you actually want the users to use Visual Studio, just install the client tools from your SQL Server installation disk and make sure you install BIDS (Business Intelligence Design Studio). This will give them a the ability to not only create reports but SSIS packages and such as well.

Alternatively, you could have them use the report builder, if a user has the appropriate permissions on the SSRS instance, inside of report manager click the Report Builder button. It will start a smaller more scaled down version of BIDS that can be used for report authoring.
