How to get rid of defunct publications in Replication Monitor?

  • I have a couple long-since-removed publications that still show up in Replication Monitor with the red X next to their names. I can't seem to be able to get rid of these. Yes, I've tried the trick of recreating the publications with the exact same name and then dropping them. No luck. Any other ideas? FWIW, the Log Reader Agent on both shows an error of "The process could not execute sp_repldone/sp_replcounters..."

  • So the agents are still there - are the jobs still there as well?

Check for the publication in the distribution database in the table MSpublications. Check for agents referencing the publications in the distribution database in the tables MSdistribution_agents, MSsnapshot_agents, MSlogreader_agents.

It's usually remnants in the distribution database if you already did the routine with creating publications with the same name and removing those publications.
