the maintainence plan wizard will also setup these date stamped backups for you.MP have always been buggy over the years... I've pretty much lost all confidence in them!
I can't agree more on this
what sort of issues have you guys had with the backup plan?
I have used it for years and never really had a problem, also you can see what t-sql the plan is producing and it seems very close to t-sql that one would write.
Bugs I remember... files not being deleted.
Jobs not running or running on wrong time.
Once I built my own set of scripts I stopped using MP and never looked back.

Agreed.
I remember something with the backups, too. Selecting "all" databases" option in the MP and then you move a db to another server or drop it. The MP still retains the old db info so the job fails. The "files deletion" problem as mentioned above.
For us, they just weren't worth the effort and didn't make our job any easier. "Old School" scripts are always reliable.
We've stopped using them year's ago. That said, many people are probably using them and they suit their needs just fine.

As I said, I've heard (and maybe focussed) on all the horror stories. I'm sure that now that the bugs are ironed out that this is a very viable solution.
But after a couple years tweaking my own I don't see the point of going back and losing all the new "features" I added into it.
