How to do Merge Replication from Local LAN server to Internet Server

  • Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could suggest a solution to our problem:

I have an in-house production database. I wanted to use Merge replication (push) to mirror parts of this data to our Internet server on the web which has a Public IP.

    Steps I followed are

    1. Created an entry in “C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” file with IP

address of the Subscriber and just the “Servername” of the Subscriber on

    publisher machine (local server)

    2. Created an Alias to the Subscriber

    3. Connected to the remote server thru Mgt Studio

    4. Created Merge Replication on the Local Database

    5. Create Subscription to the remote server.

    6. Started the Replication Agent

I receive following msg "The process could not connect to Subscriber 'ISVR'.

When I check the View Synchronization Status in Mgt studio it shows "The server 'ISVR' is not a Subscriber"

I presume that if we have a Public IP at our end, then the Merge Replication will be thru.  Is it possible to replicate without having a Public IP.

    Any suggestions,

    Thanks.

  • I have been thru the link before, its for Pull Subscription.

Anyhow when I connected the Internet Line directly to the server, Merge replication was sucessfull. So I presumed there might be some firewall issues when connected thru the proxy.

Intresting think is, after two days, when I re-tested the replication thru proxy and firewall, replication was happening without any problem.

I think a system restart might have done the trick.

I really could not figure out what exactly the problem was.

  • This is interesting as I just a had a discussion about this with a coworker and I did not know it was even possible. When I googled it the top link was this, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151319.aspx, and in one of the subarticles it says that this will only work with Pull subscriptions.

I'd appreciate it if you could write up how you got it working, at least what you know you did, and either post it here or send me a private message.

    Thanks,
