How to configure cluster

  • I want to configure cluster on my test machine (I am newbie and learnig sql 2008). I have evalution versino of SQL 2K8. I have one Main Machine installed with Windows server 2003 and two virtual machine on the main machine with Windows Server 2008(Evalutin version).

When I started to install cluster instance on main machine(Win2K3) it gives some error that says machine is not configure for clustering. I dont know what need to do for that.

Is it something needed to do with Win server 2003 ?

Am I need to add any feature to Windows server 2003 that support cluster?

Is my evalution version allow me to configure cluster?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • I tried to create new cluster using windows cluster wizard, but during analysing it gives an error says that you dont have correct version of Windows server.

I have Windows server 200, Standard edition, SP2.

Is this versino not supporting clustering ?

  • Your Version (Windows Server 2003) supports Clustering, but your Edition (Standard) does not:

If you stay with Server 2003 you would need to upgrade to the Enterprise or Datacenter Edition.

  • Thanks a lot.

For testing purpose I have Windows server 2008 Standard version too on my virtual machine with SP1. And I think it also does not support clustering. Bcos when I tried to add feature I did not found Failover cluster option.

Is SQL server depend upon the windows server OS for sql server clustering ?

Server 2008 R2 Enterprise or Datacenter is also required for clustering.

The way you have worded everything I am not sure if you're trying to setup a SQL Server Cluster, or if you are somehow under the impression that a Windows Cluster is required to run any type of SQL Server instance. A stand-alone SQL Server instance, i.e. a named or default non-clustered instance, does not require a Windows Cluster. If you are trying to setup a SQL Server Cluster, then you will need to setup a Windows Cluster first, i.e. a Windows Cluster would be a pre-requisite.

Can you clarify what it is you are trying to do?

  • Yes, Iam trying to setup sql server cluster on my virtual test machines which has windows server 2008 Standard(evalution version).

And as you said windows cluster must to install sql server cluster, i tried to install windows cluster on Win2K8 on my virtual machine but I did not found the feature of cluster on it. So I think on on windows server 2008, Standard editaion (evalution) windows cluster does not support.

Let me correct if I am wrong.

    Thanks in advance.
