how to change the primary server name from alias to host name

  • Hi all,

I would like to change the log shipping settings from using the alias name to host name.

I tried to update the log shipping tables in msdb but it failed throwing error failed to connect to the server and login failed and is from untrusted domain.

  • Updating the tables manually isn't supported (though if done completely and correctly, it should work).

The supported way is to drop log shipping and reconfigure it. Because the databases are in sync, and in the right recovery state, you wouldn't need to reinitialize anything. Just drop it and reconfigure it stating that the databases are already in sync and you should be good to go in less than 5 minutes.

  • I am in complete agreement with Robert.

Updating logshipping table(s) directly is almost like using a sledgehammer to drive down a nail, it is not necessary and further it may not always work.
