How the Licensing is calculated in SQL Server 2005?

  • Hi,

1.How the processor licensing works in SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition and Standard ?

2.Is the licensing is done on processor basis or core basis? For example, if we have a CPU with four cores how the licensing is calculated? per whole CPU or Individual core?

    3. Is any licensing cost difference between 32 bit and 64 bit SQL Server Enterprise or Standard Edition?

4.We have a SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition 32 bit and need to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64 bit. Do we need to pay for the upgrade licensing?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Abhay: Its per physical CPU based as well as monthly charges based .There might be some other ways as well >you can check the licensing pdf file easily through BING.com .

2.Is the licensing is done on processor basis or core basis? For example, if we have a CPU with four cores how the licensing is calculated? per whole CPU or Individual core?

Abhay : Its per Physical CPU based (4 Quad cores will need 4 licenses).

    3. Is any licensing cost difference between 32 bit and 64 bit SQL Server Enterprise or Standard Edition?

Abhay : no difference between 32 bit or 64 bit but STD and ENT have great difference in cost (SQL 2005 ENT is around 10 times costlier to STD / per CPU basis)

4.We have a SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition 32 bit and need to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64 bit. Do we need to pay for the upgrade licensing?

    Abhay : Yes .

    Thanks
