How powerful should be a workstation to ensure a good productivity for the SQL 2005 and VS 2005 developer?
Do you have any experience with the acoustical noise level of such workstations?
Thank you very much,

IMHO acoustical noise level 'issues' in todays technology are not acceptable for a workstation.

Many thanks Rudy, I'm glad to hear that. I just rejected a Xeon x64 double processor that was making a noise louder than a vacuum cleaner. The manufacturer insists that it is state-of-the-art.
My first question could be translated to: is Xeon x64 double processor overkill or not (for the next 3-4 years)?
Thanks again,
Dinu

I would say that as far as the power of the workstation it really depends on what you want to do.
Personally, I would be more concerned with RAM than processor speed as VS 2005 seems to hog memory.
I have 1Gb RAM in a 2.2GHz AMD PC and this produces (barely) acceptable performance. A 3.2GHz PC with 512MB struggles.
If possible I would recommend at least 2GB of suitably fast RAM plus a fast hard disk.
I can't comment on machine noise because I am deaf
