how is a server farm administrated in the real world?

  • i was just curious; If you are a ISP hosting a bunch of web servers and SQL servers, how are all those servers managed? are they all on a single domain within the ISP so that one login under Builtin\Admins can administer then, back em up, run jobs etc?

I would think if they were all colocated servers or something the administration must be a nightmare...how do you make sure they are all with the latest service pack, etc.

  • I would guess that you would have something like a SUS server. That is the 'central' update server. It gets all the updates (such as from Microsoft) and then distributes the updates to all the other systems. It's the same as doing automatic updates, but you control when it happens and what updates are applied.
