does anybody know at what level it checks connectivity to the P & M?
is it pinging / checking access to the database / checking at the app level? & how often does it check?
i'm troubleshooting various issues & knowing the exact underlying processes would really help.
thank you.

what are you referring to as Pand M

It thought it should be checking the db itself is online. MS's documentation seems to suggest it's at the instance level though.
How often I don't know but the PARTNER TIMEOUT value will determine how long it'll go without a successful 'up' check before triggering failover.

I see, P and M are Principal and Mirror, correct?

Interesting. Thanks Gazareth. PARTNER_TIMEOUT. I hadn't clocked that there was such a value.
Re: instance / database level, I guess thinking it through, it doesn't really matter - it's just that it's one of those small details that just help me thoroughly understand what's going on
Yes, P = principal, M = mirror.
Cheers!
