I just happen to answer a post, and I saw that someone has over 2000 points in less than 60 visits.
I thought that was wierd, because I've been poisting and answering a little bit for years, and I barely have as many points as this new poster.
What am I missing? I thought points=posts, wehether questions or answers.
here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

You get points not only for posting questions and answers on the forums but also for correctly answering the Question of the Day. You can see the top leaders in total points, forum posts, and Question of the Day by viewing Member scores and standings page. You can get ther by clicking Show more in the Top Members (last 30 days) header bar. Please note that this page has not been updated since the problems on SSC yesterday.
In regard to the individual you indicated, it is quite possible that this individual has answered many of the QotD correctly in addition to any posts completed.
I personally have spent time going through old QotD answering them, and if you were to answer 100 questions in one visit, you could easily reach a significant number quickly.

You do? Never saw my points increase for the 2 articles I wrote here on SSC.

We used to award points for articles in contests, but haven't done that in a few years. mainly because contests are a PIA.
We might add some other items in there. We've talked about a more "stack overflow" type of rating where we're give points for articles/scripts, depending on how others rated them.

ok, it's the middle of the night, and to boost my coolness, i answered a hundred or so questions in the Question of the Day section;
they don't get added to/update my points instantly, so my question is whether it is a once a day update, or is there some fallout from some of the changes made recently?
also, doing the math, 2000 questions, and to get them right, assuming 1 minute for each question, takes about 33 hours of dedicated time in the QOTD section....the poster i mentioned must have some serious free time to do that in 59 visits.

First, you'll have to hold off on this for a day or so. We've disabled a few things because of server issues.
The points update pretty often, but there is some caching. I think the main page caches things for like 5 minutes or so, but I'll have to check when a dev comes up for air.
I think the points listed in here update more often. And I think that was one of the issues. That might be disabled for now.

OK I've got ~140 or so points accrued from the QOD section, that are not applied yet to the points viewed in the forums; right now my rank is "SSCrazy", but if I get those points, I'm over the edge and would get the "Hall of Fame" moniker.
sync me up!
hehe thanks, I know you have more to do than fiddle with that, but now I've gotta go posting crazy to self promote myself to the next level

Almost sounds like you're playing an MMORPG. "Gotta get to the next level, need my exp!"
I recommend doing the daily faction quests. You'll get some exp, and you can get that much closer to Exalted with various groups. 🙂
(And I don't even play WoW any more, but I still see a post like that and come up with this kind of weird connection!)
