what is the proper way to remove sp4? If I back up the databases, ,the DB version is SP4, so if I remove SQL 2000 and get it up to SP3a, then I will not be able to resote the databases right?
Different versions right? I tried restoring a SQL 2000 SP3a DB over an existing sp4 DB bt it wont allow the restore.

I'm not sure what changed in SP4. If there are structural changes in the database files, then you are stuck with the long process of scripting out schema and permissions and moving data.
It's possible you could detach a database and then attach it on SP3a, but you'd have to check.
If that doesn't work, then you'd need to either invoke the copy database wizard and pray, or manually move data/schema/permissions back.
Has stuff changed since SP4 was installed? Do you have backups pre-installation?
