How do I place my files in SAN env?

    You *CAN* actually expand volumes on Basic disks, with the following caveats:

    - can't do it to the System or Boot volume

    - can only expand if the unallocated space is contiguous

    - only NTFS of course

    We use only basic disks on all RAID partitions (DAS only mind you, no SAN here) and extend our volumes without problems. In most cases the new space is available immediately without a reboot too (depending on your RAID controller & drivers).

    ...'Basic' disks cannot be expanded on the fly. In other words if you have a 100Gb LUN and you want to make it 200 Gb on the SAN you can but Windows will only know about the first 100 Gb. So to expand it on Windows you need to present a different drive with your 200 Gb and then copy the 100 Gb drive data to the 200 Gb drive. Yes it is a pain.
