Hi,
I've found your articles on SQL to be profound and very informative. I've undertaking various Microsoft SQL courses, but would like to gain an opportunity to have commercial experience. Do you have any suggestions how I approach it? Do you know of any companies who will take on a novice SQL developer? Or any centres? I would really like to get my foot through the door, and I know because of the currecnt economic climate companies may be reluctant to train someone with limited experience. But if you don't get the experience how will you gain employment? Any suggestions would be very appreciative.
Kind Regards,
Ashwell

In some situations the way to get your foot in the door is to take a lower level position with a company that may lead you into some DBA work, for example a lot of people start off as db operators or in IT support and then use this experience to take on more and more DBA work.

DBA just doesn't really have "entry level" positions as such. Most of the people I know that are DBA's came out of a different discipline, usually development or systems. So the way to go, may be the path that a lot of the rest of us travelled. Start out in tech support or development and then work your way over to the DBA team.

The other thing that can be done is work with non-profit/church/whatever groups as a volunteer.

Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. I have seen a few posts here on SSC from people where that is exactly where they got initial experience. It may just mean you need to look a little harder or just differently. It might be developing a solution to a problem that a non-profit/church/whatever groups is experiencing using tools like SQL Server 2005 Express (free) and Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions (also free).
It is possible, sometimes you just have to look a little harder.

You can definitely gain experience with volunteer projects. Just be sure that you aren't causing harm to someone's efforts with your lack of experience.
I agree with Grant. I don't know anyone that would take a DBA with no experience. You want to start working somewhere in IT, likely a help desk of some sort to understand, or show you understand, how computers and IT work.
