You need to completely uninstall the express edition - you might need to go via control panel, change installed program and uninstall that way.
Reboot.
Install SSMS from the standard edition media.

Thank you for your response, appreciate it. But I upgrade in the production server so I am afraid if I remove the SQL server and when I install it , I couldnt get my databases back.I am using SQL Standard not Express Edition.
How is that ?
Thanks

Are you upgrading the SQL database engine/instance or just SQL Management Studio (the client tools)?
If you are upgrading the instance, you can perform an edition upgrade via the install media and selecting "Maintenance", "Edition Upgrade". You need to upgrade the database engine before upgrading the client tools.
Make sure you have a full backup of your databases before attempting any upgrade, including the master database. If needed, you can completely rebuild the instance.

I am upgrading the Management studio ( client tool ) only and I dont want to upgrade the server edition.
The problem is when I want to change from management studio basic to complete there is no option for choosing the complete one (as attached). I am confused ...( Previously I didnt uninstall it but I did the repair straight away using the Standard Edition )
Any advice about it ?
Much appreciated.

In the screenshot you have attached, it says the edition you are trying to install is "Express with Advanced Services".
Express editions only include the "Basic" management tools.
Are you running the install from the SQL Standard edition media?
Can you answer the following:
- What edition and version of SQL is installed
- What edition and version do you want installed
- What final outcome are you trying to achieve

Hi Andrew,
Happy New Year and thanks for your response. I have just checked my email and got your reply. Thank you so much.
1. At the moment I am using SQL Standard Edition with SQL Management Studio "Basic"
2. I want to upgrade it into SQL Standard Edition with SQL Management Studio "Complete"
3. I am trying to modify the maintenance plan for Backup because it is failed . I reckon if I upgrade the SQL Management studio , I am able to modify it.
Any advice please ?
Thank you so much
