A bit late for you but to answer the earlier question around the Start button being greyed out for SQL Browser Service, check the Start Mode using SQL Config Manager. If the service is disabled (displayed as 'Other (Boot, System, Disabled or Unknown)' then the start button will be greyed out.
Installing the second instance of SQL will have enabled the Browser Service to provide connection requests with the details (port no, for example) of the instance that they are trying to connect to.
