Hosting Microsoft SQL Server

  • A large number of customers are requesting us to host their SQL database over VPN/Internet.

The problem is that the application they are using, uses ODBC to connect and has NO built in error handling if the connection drops for a few seconds.

We tested this in our lab by jamming the router for a period of 10 sec. Then the application hung with an error message and required the user to log on again.

Bad app maybe, but with over 10.000 commercial users it's worth the $. The app is 3rd party and they are not willing to rewrite the stuff. It's written in OMNIS. http://www.omnis.net:doze:

So - any suggestions? SQL Relay at Customer Site?

  • This was removed by the editor as SPAM

  • That's a tough one. What about putting the SQL Server at their sites and you vpn in to admin it?

  • Good idea, but it should be cost effective. Micro$oft licenses is expensive, and since the DB doesn't really demand lots of processors it's no problem running 50+ databases on a dual Xeon CPU/4GB RAM. Most of if is stored procedures - so MSSQL is a must.

Anybody with experience in SQL Relay?
