Hosting a database at one location and your website at another?

  • What are the issues associated with hosting a MS SQL Server 2008 R2 database (or any DB for that matter) at one location (say Dallas) and your website at another (say New Jersey). Is there a HUGE performance issue? I would prefer not to host the database on the same server as the website (I/O and resource issues).

  • I would be hesitant to host those pieces cross country. I would expect there be fairly serious performance penalties. While I agree that hosting them on the same machine is not a good idea, it doesn't track that not hosting them on the same machine equals hosting them cross country.

The reason I ask is because I found what seems to be a really good SQL database host, but it's at a different location than my website.

  • Then I would look at a place nearby to host my website.
