I've worked for large organizations that were saturated in "corporate culture". Thanks to social media, this kind of thing is becomming more common. Also small start-up companys preoccupy themselves with culture and image as well, although probably at a more superficial level, more for the sake of publicity and getting their brand mentioned in the media.Honestly, however, I'd rather not have my email inbox spammed with a dozen daily invitations to volunteer at a pet shelter or reminders to take some sensitivity training course. It becomes annoying. I'm a responsible adult and a professional; just give me an interesting project to work on.
Privately owned, medium sized IT organizations... they're not so much into this type of thing. They tend to be very focussed and product oriented. I'm sure management at these companies wish they could focus more on culture, but they're just too damn busy building solutions and innovating. Honestly, that's my preferred environment to work in.
What he said!
+1
that second paragraph (the part about volunteerism on behalf of the company about 10-12 weekends out of the year) was what we had. plus since we were IT, we were ALL expected to receive server alerts and get woken up in the middle of the night.
Nothing like living 24/7 for that beefy 5-figure paycheck, eh?

Not to be to political, but people 'hired' George W. Bush because 'He was someone I could see having a beer with'. That turned out to be a horrible 'hire'.Not to stay political, but Obama is better???
Why yes it is. 🙂 Economy is a lot better, getting out of wars we shouldn't have been in. I could go on, 'Where are those weapons of mass destruction"? 😀

Erm...
The latter of the two can properly pronounce the word "nuclear"
Of course, I shouldn't pick. As an American, I am proud to say I know that the word for the stuff coke cans are made from is "aluminium".
The word "aluminum" was a way for greedy folks here in America to patent it back in the day without any issue.
AL-YOO-MIN-EE-UM...it really is the proper way to say it...learn it, my fellow Americans 😛 😎

My ex-mother-in-law pronounces WASH with an R sound. So what if Bush mispronounced "nuclear" since it was apparent everyone knew what he was talking about. At least Bush wasn't trying to destroy America and make it a Socialist country.

Southerners are frequently criticized for their pronunciation, I never understood why northerners get a free pass. New Yawk!

I have nothing to hide, that doesn't mean the government gets a free pass to ignore the 4th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and violate my privacy!
I hate that excuse by liberals/progressives: Why worry if you have nothing to hide. That isn't the point. If you don't have probable cause that I am violating the law, stay out of my business.

I don't normally partake in political discussions but I EXPECT that people on this website would be highly competent and knowledgeable about any subject they discuss. It's already apparent that is not true. So if you post something I'd appreciate it if y'all (southern) take the time to fully research posts and give complete information not headlines from Fox/MSNBC etc.

* Sigh *
Well, let's talk UK politics, then.
What's everyone's take on Jeremy Corbyn?
Is there going to be another Scexit referendum anytime soon?
Should we stay in the EU?
That should get things rolling (or maybe not! I've no idea how many Brits are on this site). 😉

That gets to be a slippery slope. You don't have to look back that far to find political operatives using data that might seem innocuous to make major conclusions about someone's political affiliation and/or how much of a threat. Think Mccarthy - you could be friend of a friend of a friend of a suspected communist and all of a sudden - you're in a congressional hearing fighting for your freedom.
I remember getting called in during my 2nd year in ROTC for a grilling. Turns out one of my best friends in high school in Europe was the son of the French communist party lead: I went through weeks of back and forth having to prove that no I did not intend to bring down the government, etc.... He and I were just teammates on the soccer team.
Guilt by association is real and can get VERY ugly through no fault of your own.

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

Personally, I think requiring or expecting an employee to engage socially outside of the workplace at all as a part of employment is a bit...stepford.Given, requiring an employee to become buddies/friends/pals/mates/co-dependent on their fellow co-workers and expecting them to "get along" are two very different things.
I'm not sure you're looking at this openly, but rather as an either or. I think you shouldn't be expected to engage socially all the time, or even a lot, but I'm not sure you fit the culture if you *never* do either. Like many things, it's a balance. We are social creatures.
I'm not advocating friends. I'm advocating some level of respect and working towards a common goal, regardless of differences.

The biggest problem in IT today is the "can they fit in" problem. The problem is that people use this to justify racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. One of the main reasons IT is so white, male, straight and cis is that those hiring don't feel as comfortable with people who aren't like them. Even hiring for ability is clouded by these things, with the hiring people judging those who aren't like them as less competent even before they get to the "will the fit in" questions. There have been studies that show this.As such, I think this editorial is entirely backwards. Hire for diversity and work on "fitting in" once they get hired. If you ignore the "fitting in" question you're more likely to get a variety of ideas, experiences, and approaches and your product will be better as a result. If you can't get along with the vast majority of people, maybe you shouldn't be a manager.
And personally, I almost never socialize with co-workers. I have friends, I don't have time for work friends. Not to say I'm not friendly with people from work, but we're not making plans to hang out together aside from a very occasional work dinner, usually because someone is leaving or was just hired. Lunch is far more likely.
Not sure it's the biggest issue, but it is an issue. Hiring for fit isn't an excuse for discrimination. At all.
I think it's hard to get people to fit in later. We have to have some level of mutual respect and look to work together. That doesn't mean we become friends. In fact, you should make sure you have a diversity of opinions, but having people that can sit in meetings and debate issues, get along to solve problems, etc. is important.
You also hit on my point. You occasionally socialize. That's fine. That is needed. You can't always avoid social situations at work.
