High Availability Reporting Services

  • Hi All,

I'm at a place where they rely heavily on SSRS reports - so any downtime to them of these reports is a money drain. They do not want to move away from SSRS, so my question is, what is the best way to make SSRS highly available?

They only have 1 SSRS Server at the moment, that hosts the reportserver db but not the actual data sources, they are held on clustered and AG instances elsewhere in the domain.

However an outtage of the the single reports server leaves them up the creek.

Would Scale out help in this setting? Or is that aimed more at performance and Load Balancing?

If I use an AG, I believe that SSRS doesn't support it? Is that correct - because msdb cannot be part of a AG - so I would lose the subscriptions up on failing over...

Any thoughts on the right way to deal with this?

    Cheers

    Alex

  • Reading this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh882437.aspx it details at the bottom that after the ReportServer database recovers it recreates the jobs for subscriptions, so looks like you can stick SSRS on an AG no problems.

Scale Out is an Enterprise only feature, so if your on Standard then its going to be an upgrade to Enterprise and also additional licenses for the other nodes in the scale out setup, but it will give you what you need if you have NLB so it can direct the clients back to an active box.
